A 28-year-old man has been arrested after a firearm was discharged on a residential street in Bury, Greater Manchester, on Saturday afternoon (29 March 2025).
The incident happened at around 2.25pm on Maxwell Street, where a man reportedly approached a property carrying both a knife and a gun, before firing a shot towards a motorbike parked outside. The suspect then fled the scene.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and police were able to swiftly detain the suspect. He was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear and possession of a bladed article. The man remains in custody.
Detective Chief Inspector Victoria Kenyon of Greater Manchester Police’s Bury district said:
“We swiftly arrested a man yesterday following reports of shots fired. I’m pleased to say no-one was injured during the incident.
“Incidents of this nature are extremely rare in Bury, but I understand that they can cause considerable concern for the community—especially as this took place in daylight on a public street.
“We believe this was a targeted incident involving individuals known to each other, and there is no wider risk to the public.”

The scene on Maxwell Street has since been cleared, but police have established a new scene on Mossfield Close as part of ongoing enquiries. A large multi-agency presence is expected to remain in the area throughout the day.
Officers are continuing to appeal for witnesses and urge residents to check CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage from the area around the time of the incident.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting log 1758 of 29/03/25. Alternatively, details can be shared anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
