The charitable organisation known as the LGBTQI+ Forum in Bury, has issued a statement:
We, the Bury LGBTQI+ Forum condemn the attempt by Project 29 to stir up hatred against the LGBTQI community in our town.
We believe Project 29 are doing this by promoting YouTube videos that preach hatred against our community and negatively target local councillors for supporting our community. In addition, Project 29 is currently displaying banners and posters which equate the sex education, which the government has rightly decided every school has a legal duty to provide, with child sex abuse.
Bury LGBTQI+ Forum welcomes the fact that we have received excellent and consistent support from Bury Council. Both from the widest range of councillors and from the Senior Management Team. This has enabled us to develop our work to improve the quality of life for LGBTQI people in the borough and to challenge discrimination, ignorance, and prejudice wherever it occurs.
In recent years we have organised events for LGBT History month and Black History month supported new Pride events in Prestwich and Ramsbottom and developed our work around challenging Hate Crime and Domestic Abuse.
As a local charity we would welcome an open and honest discussion about these issues with members of Project 29.
We call on Project 29 to remove the banners and posters they are displaying which we believe are inciting hatred against our community.
We call upon individuals and groups throughout the borough to sign the Open Letter we have written to highlight this important issue and to demonstrate their commitment to fairness and equality and their opposition to hatred and bigotry.
