The Mayor of Bury is inviting young people (aged 4-19) to take part in a special creative competition celebrating the Coronation of King Charles III on Saturday 6 May and commemorating Queen Elizabeth II.
They are invited to create works of public art, textiles or craft pieces, a digital display, or a performance – the possibilities are endless!
All entrants will receive a certificate of participation and will be included in an online exhibition. The winners will get the opportunity to work with an artist and see their design become part of a commemorative legacy to mark the occasion. They will also be invited to a special event hosted by the mayor.
Details of this competition are being sent to all the borough’s schools, and more details will shortly be available on the council’s website at https://www.bury.gov.uk/local-leisure-events/coronation-king-charles
Councillor Charlotte Morris, cabinet member for culture and the economy, said: “The death of the Queen last year was a moment of great sadness and reflection, but also an opportunity to commemorate the life of Her Majesty.
“In May, we will celebrate country’s first coronation for 70 years, the first to take place in most people’s lifetime. We’ve designed this competition to bring people together through art and create something special to mark a moment of history and share our appreciation of where we live.”
Suggestions
The life and death of Queen Elizabeth II and the imminent coronation of King Charles III are momentous occasions in the life of our borough.
What does it mean to you? What do you hope for the future with a new King? What were the most memorable points from the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, or what did you admire most about her?
How can you represent Bury in your design? Perhaps thinking about a royal visit, such as when Queen Elizabeth II opened Bury Town Hall.
Be as creative as possible!
