Heywood AODS honours retiring President after 40 years at the helm

Heywood Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society has paid tribute to its long-serving President, Keith Greenwood, during a surprise celebration marking his retirement after four decades of dedicated leadership.

Members of Heywood AODS and its youth section, HeyKids, gathered for a heartfelt evening at the society’s Christmas Party, celebrating Keith Greenwood’s extraordinary contribution to the local arts community. The evening included a surprise presentation and moving speeches recognising his commitment alongside wife Aileen, as the couple prepare to step back after nearly 70 years with the group.

NODA District 7 representative Claire Ashworth joined the festivities, describing it as one of her final official engagements. She opened the tribute by revealing the “plotting and subterfuge” involved in bringing Keith and Aileen to the venue without them suspecting the honour being planned.

Claire praised the Greenwoods' journey with the society, which began in 1957. She highlighted their tireless efforts, on and off the stage, from building sets to making costumes, selling tickets, and performing. Their sons have also been active backstage, continuing a family legacy rooted in the theatre.

As applause filled the room, society secretary Lindsey Evans invited Keith and Aileen to the stage, presenting them with a glass trophy to honour Keith’s 40-year presidency and the couple’s unwavering service. Claire Ashworth led a toast, inviting all attendees to raise a glass “to Keith and Aileen”.

In his speech, Keith reflected on the early days of the society and its growth into a thriving creative community. He recalled fundraising efforts, fierce committee debates, and the journey through various venues before settling at Heywood Civic Centre. He also paid tribute to Aileen’s many roles, from wardrobe to ticketing and front of house, with a quiet resilience and humour.

“The friendships formed, the laughter shared, the teamwork, and the sense of belonging, those are the things that stay with you,” Keith told the room.

He also gave his full backing to his successor, Mrs Lynn Byrne, who will take over the role of President. He assured members that the society was in “safe, talented hands” and said he would remain a source of support while stepping aside from official duties.

Keith closed his speech with a message of thanks and optimism:
“To Heywood AODS, here’s to the memories we’ve made, the friendships we’ve built, and the future that lies ahead. Long may the curtain rise, and long may the magic of theatre continue to thrive here in Heywood.”
