A ten year old pupil from a Middleton primary special school has seen her festive artwork turned into an official Christmas card used by the borough council.
Hephzibah, who attends Newlands School, was selected as the winner of a Christmas card design competition open to local schools. Her design featured a traditional festive scene including a Christmas tree, wrapped presents and a snowman.
The competition was launched last month by Rochdale Borough Council leader Neil Emmott, inviting pupils across the borough to submit original festive artwork.
A nine year old pupil named Briana was chosen as runner up, with judges praising her striking Christmas themed design. Both pupils attend Newlands School, which supports children aged three to 11 with additional needs.
Hephzibah’s winning artwork was turned into an electronic Christmas card and emailed to hundreds of individuals and organisations. Printed versions were also produced and posted as part of the council’s seasonal correspondence.
Last week Councillor Emmott visited the school to thank the pupils in person. During the visit, he presented printed copies of the card along with gift vouchers and festive treats for classmates and staff.
Speaking during the visit, Councillor Emmott said he had been impressed by the quality and creativity of all the entries and described choosing a winner as difficult due to the standard of work.
The artwork produced by pupils will also be shared on the council’s social media channels over the festive period.
Headteacher Farzana Shah said the recognition was a source of pride for the school and families, adding that both pupils had represented their classmates with creativity and enthusiasm.
