Rochdale Harriers have completed a dramatic non-stop relay run covering 192 miles across England, tackling iconic national parks and unpredictable conditions in just over 42 hours.
More than 40 members of Rochdale Harriers running club took on one of Britain’s most celebrated endurance challenges last weekend, a continuous relay along Alfred Wainwright’s Coast to Coast route.
Setting off from St Bees on the Cumbrian coast at 9.13pm on Thursday 26 June, the club’s baton was carried day and night across 21 gruelling legs before finally reaching Robin Hood’s Bay on the North Yorkshire coast at 3.19pm on Saturday 28 June. The full crossing took 42 hours, six minutes, and 46 seconds.
The trail spans three national parks, the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, and is widely recognised for its rugged beauty and historical significance. But it wasn’t all sunshine and postcard views.
Runners tackling the early legs through the Lake District were met with high winds, torrential rain and near-zero visibility, testing both their physical strength and mental resilience. Despite the poor weather, team spirit remained high, and progress through Friday night was so strong that the team found themselves two hours ahead of schedule.
That lead was lost early on Saturday morning due to a logistical hiccup, some runners slept through their alarms, arriving late to their relay handovers and causing delays of over an hour. Even so, the team finished just ten minutes ahead of their planned time, basking in sunshine as they ran through the final fishing village streets to the finish.
The successful event was credited to meticulous planning, led by club member John Mayall and supported by Nick Barton, David Bull and Juliet Smith. The team had been working on the logistics since completing the Pennine Way in a similar relay format last year.
The club, while modest in size, continues to punch above its weight with these ambitious and physically demanding team challenges. Discussions are already under way about what trail they’ll take on next.
