A section of Grimshaw Lane in Middleton has been closed after a sinkhole appeared in the carriageway and further excavation work raised safety concerns.
The closure affects the stretch between Castle Street and Wade Street.
Roch Valley Radio understands the road was initially affected by a medium sized sinkhole which appeared on Grimshaw Lane on Tuesday.
Following further investigation and excavation work at the site, the road was closed on Wednesday afternoon as a precaution to prevent further deterioration.
Residents have been urged not to move traffic management cones that have been put in place around the affected area.
The closure is expected to have an impact on local traffic as Grimshaw Lane is a key route through Middleton.
Bus services are also being affected. The 112 service is being diverted through Alkrington via Kirkway before rejoining its normal route on Greengate at Mainway East.
Highways officers attended the scene today, Wednesday, 24 June, and responsibility for repairs may be transferred to United Utilities. A decision on responsibility is expected to be confirmed on Thursday morning.
Speaking with Councillor Dylan Williams, he described the situation as urgent and has asked officers to prioritise the repair work due to the importance of the route.
Further updates are expected once responsibility for the repair has been established.
