Plans to turn a former car dealership in Rochdale into a modern fitness studio have been approved by Rochdale Borough Council.
The Renault Pentagon showroom at Eagle Technology Park on Queensway will be converted into a new gym known as Gymbound after planners gave the scheme the go ahead.
The application, submitted by Chris Mason, seeks to change the use of the existing commercial building from car sales to leisure. The structure itself will remain in place, with internal alterations to create gym and studio space.
Planning documents prepared by Studio HEDG Architects state that the aim is to create an inclusive facility offering a broad range of fitness and wellbeing services. The design and access statement says the development is intended to improve access to sport, support physical and mental health, and create new employment opportunities.
The statement also notes that although two gyms already operate nearby, there is a high number of residential properties within close proximity to the site. The applicant argues this indicates demand for additional facilities to serve local residents.
Access to the site will remain unchanged.
Revised parking plans show 48 parking bays, including six electric vehicle charging points and 10 additional spaces with cabling installed for future chargers. Three disabled bays and two motorbike spaces are included.
A new cycle park with space for 12 bicycles will also be installed to encourage active travel.
Council planners concluded that the proposal aligns with local planning policies relating to health, wellbeing and employment, clearing the way for the site to move from car sales to leisure use.
