When The Going Gets Tough

Greater Manchester urged to check before travelling as Storm Goretti set to bring snow

People across Greater Manchester are being advised to check travel plans and allow extra time as Storm Goretti is forecast to hit the region this evening, bringing snow and the risk of widespread disruption.

A yellow weather warning for snow is in place from 5pm today until midday tomorrow for parts of the city region including Rochdale, Oldham, Tameside and Stockport.

An amber warning has also been issued for snow between 8pm tonight and 9am tomorrow for nearby areas including parts of Derbyshire and Yorkshire, raising the likelihood of knock on disruption to journeys in and out of Greater Manchester.

Transport services across the Bee Network are expected to be affected. Interchanges, platforms and pedestrian crossings are being treated with grit and anti icing measures, while ice breaker trams are on standby to keep overhead lines clear.

Tram services on the Oldham, Rochdale and Ashton lines are most at risk of disruption, along with bus services in the north and east of the city region.

Transport for Greater Manchester has urged anyone planning to travel to check the Bee Network app or website for the latest updates, allow extra time and, where possible, travel before 5pm.

Rail services will also be impacted. No trains will run from 6pm this evening on the following routes:

  • New Mills Central to Sheffield meaning no trains between Manchester and Sheffield
  • Hazel Grove to Buxton
  • Guide Bridge to Glossop and Hadfield

Ticket acceptance will be in place on the 237 and 341 bus services tonight and tomorrow. All affected train routes are currently planned to reopen at 12.01am on Saturday.

Danny Vaughan, TfGM’s Chief Network Officer said: “We are expecting Storm Goretti to hit Greater Manchester as we head into the evening peak travel time and we are urging everyone to check their plans before they travel, leave extra time and if possible to consider if they can make their journey before 5pm before the storm hits.

“Working with our partners and operators we are ready to respond to the storm and help to keep Greater Manchester moving – and I’d like to thank all of our staff for their efforts to do so.

“There may also be an impact on journeys tomorrow morning so if you are planning to travel then please check before you do so.”

Passengers travelling elsewhere on the rail network are being warned of possible short notice disruption and are advised to check National Rail before setting off.

Drivers are also being asked to take extra care, allow more time for journeys and drive to the conditions.
