This evening Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has authorised a section 60 authority in the above defined area of Derker in Oldham.
The section 60 powers come under the 1994 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act, and will run for 9 hours and 30 minutes, having begun at 4.30pm this evening (Monday 5 June 2023). The authorisation will end at 2am on Tuesday 6 June 2023.
The section 60 authority - which grants officers extended powers to stop and search individuals within the area - has been introduced following reports on Sunday (4 June) of groups of males causing disturbances within the Derker area.
It is believed that the groups were fighting in the street and causing damage to nearby vehicles.
Two people have been arrested on suspicion of possessing offensive weapons, following a section 60 authority which ran overnight. Highly visible patrols will continue in order to provide reassurance to the local communities.
Inspector Anthony Allt, from GMP’s Oldham Division, said: “We believe that this section 60 order is appropriate and necessary to reassure those in the Derker community and to keep people safe.
“Officers will be out tonight and in the coming days to ensure that there is a highly visible police presence and to deter any criminality from the streets.”
The areas included in the s60 boundaries are:
- A672 at Derker Street to Clyde Street
- Clyde Street into Whetstone Hill Road and to Vulcan Street
- Vulcan Street to Buxton Road
- Buxton Road to Stoneleigh Street
- Stoneleigh Street to Derker Street
If you have any concerns, or you wish to report a crime, you can contact police online via www.gmp.police.uk or by calling 101. Always dial 999 in an emergency.
Details can also be passed to the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
