The East Lancashire Railway’s oldest working volunteer, Bob Johnson, has celebrated his 93rd birthday and more than three decades of dedicated service.
A familiar face to generations of visitors, Bob Johnson, known affectionately as the ‘Godfather’ of the East Lancashire Railway, was honoured this week on his 93rd birthday with a special award recognising 36 years of volunteer service.
The celebration took place surrounded by friends, staff and fellow volunteers at the heritage railway, which stretches from Heywood to Rawtenstall. Bob, who still works on site every Tuesday and Thursday, was presented with the award by ELR chairman Mike Kelly.
“It was my privilege to present a special award to Bob, who is quite rightly acknowledged as the ‘Godfather’ of the railway,” Mr Kelly said. “Bob launched the ‘Hit Squad’ midweek team 32 years ago and still turns up without fail. All his volunteer pals were there to celebrate his special day.”
Bob’s long history with the ELR includes everything from dressing as a snowman on the first Santa Special, to being a storyteller at Day Out With Thomas events and helping to lead the Christmas present picking team. He has also served as a Director of the organisation.
"His tireless efforts over the decades have helped shape the railway into one of the region’s most cherished heritage attractions."
