Globe House celebrates 21 years of business support

The Mayor and Mayoress celebrate with staff, tenants and guests at Globe House, Rochdale

Globe House in Rochdale celebrated its birthday this week, marking 21 years of the council run building that provides managed workspace for local businesses.

In 2002, Globe House opened, named after the mill that previously stood on the site and has been a base for many growing businesses since then, including Zen Internet. For thousands of motorists it’s well known as the home of the local DVLA Driving Test Centre.

To mark the occasion, over 40 guests including current tenants and customers, former tenants and representatives of organisations involved with the centre joined the Mayor and Mayoress to toast the occasion.

The Mayor, Councillor Mike Holly who opened the event said Globe House provides a vital role in helping companies: “This building has meant a lot to so many people over the last 21 years and certainly played its part of nurturing small and growing businesses, giving them a base as well as access to the support they need. It’s impressive to see how many small businesses have started-up here, or have been based here as they grew, like Zen Internet, and I look forward to many more in the future. I also want to say what a lovely atmosphere there is, so thank you to the staff who keep Globe House running every day, I know our tenants really appreciate it.”

Current tenants at the event included Paul Ackroyd, partner at A2 Solicitors LLP who moved to Globe House two years ago, said: “We’re really happy here, it’s close to local transport links and we have ample parking outside as well as access to smart meeting rooms. The services here are great, and our clients and staff like it.”

One of the newest arrivals is Ellen Smith Coach Tours who moved to Globe House in August. Managing director Paul Targett said it was an easy decision: “We looked at neighbouring towns but this was our first choice. Having a staffed reception, ICT support, onsite security and parking is really useful and we have space to grow here too.”

Councillor Daniel Meredith, cabinet member for housing and regeneration said he was pleased to see the building continue to thrive: “I think tenants appreciate the facilities, the support and especially for the smaller businesses, the opportunity to be part of something bigger. Globe House is in demand and almost 100% occupied which is also testament to the pride and dedication of the team who run it, along with all the recommendations and positive feedback from tenants.”

Lorranie Mark Bell, one of the very first tenants to move into the building with Metro Moneywise Credit Union in 2002 also spoke about her memories during the event.
