On Monday 4th March 2024, George Galloway was sworn in to Parliament as the new MP for Rochdale after his landslide by-election win last week following the death of Sir Tony Lloyd the former MP for Rochdale who sadly passed away.
Upon arriving at Westminster on Monday morning, he told reporters ‘I always loved the building – the people in it, not quite so much.’
During an interview afterwards, talking to Sky News, George Galloway MP said:
“In the towns around Rochdale, Oldham, Blackburn, Burnley, Nelson, Bury. We’ll be putting candidates up in all these places, and we will either win, or make sure that Keir Starmer doesn’t win.”
It is believed that the candidates will stand in the Bury East, Redvales and Moorside wards in this next local election, however, it is currently unknown whether these will be independent candidates or candidates for (WPB) Workers Party of Britain.
Over the past couple of months, the Deputy Leader of Bury Council, one of the Labour councillors for Redvales, has been under fire and had the whip removed from him along with the Deputy Leader role, resulting in him standing as an independent whilst police investigations were carried out.
After an election landslide in Rochdale, the question is whether Bury Labour will lose three councillors to the Workers Party of Britain overnight in the coming months.
George Galloway MP has been approached for comment.
