Former England footballer Stuart Pearce has joined Hearing Dogs for Deaf People to encourage more people across Greater Manchester to volunteer as puppy trainers for the charity's life changing assistance dogs.
The charity is looking for volunteers in Rochdale, Bury and Bolton, along with other parts of Greater Manchester.
Hearing Dogs for Deaf People has launched a new campaign featuring former England defender Stuart Pearce to recruit more volunteer puppy trainers.
The national charity, which has a puppy training hub in Greater Manchester, is seeking volunteers in Rochdale, Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan.
Volunteers take a puppy into their home from eight weeks old and, with support from a local dog training instructor, help begin the dog's training and socialisation before it is matched with a deaf person or someone with hearing loss.
The charity said no previous dog training experience is required and all costs are covered.
Stuart Pearce said. "I've been part of some brilliant teams in my time, but this is a club that really changes lives. The volunteers at Hearing Dogs are incredible, and it's been a joy to help shine a light on the work they do."
Sandra, who has volunteered with the charity since 2015, said she had helped train several puppies over the years.
She said. "There's never a dull moment and it's very rewarding watching them work through their training and go on to be fully qualified hearing dogs, making a huge difference to the life of the deaf person they are partnered with."
David Robson, spokesperson for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, said the dogs are trained to alert deaf people to important sounds including smoke alarms, doorbells, alarm clocks and a baby's cry.
He said the dogs also provide companionship for people who can feel isolated because of hearing loss.
Further information about becoming a volunteer puppy trainer is available on the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People website.
