Free augmented reality trail, festive lights switch-on and family events launch Christmas celebrations in Bury
Families in Bury can look forward to a high-tech festive adventure this winter, as the town centre is transformed into a Christmas-themed augmented reality trail from 8 November to 31 December 2025.
The North Pole Safari, a free experience funded by Bury BID and produced by High Street Safari, invites visitors to explore Bury using only a smartphone, unlocking digital characters and interactive storytelling at locations across the town.
The trail brings to life a cast of animated Christmas characters, including mischievous elves and a friendly yeti, with 10 QR code ‘story points’ displayed in shop windows throughout the centre. Participants can take selfies with AR animations, guide the story’s direction, and claim a festive prize after completing the route.
Town Centre Director Nigel Shields said: “We’re thrilled to bring the Bury BID North Pole Safari to Bury this year. It’s a magical way for families to explore our town, enjoy the festive lights, and discover Christmas surprises around every corner.”
The trail launches on Saturday 8 November alongside Bury’s Christmas lights switch-on, with displays from Bury BID, The Rock, and Mill Gate Shopping Centre ensuring the town centre sparkles throughout the season.
Complementing the Safari Trail is a packed festive schedule, including The Rock’s Christmas Parade, Santa’s Grotto, a Festive Food Fair, and the return of the popular Festive Land Train. Families can also enjoy a performance of The Pied Piper of Hamelin at The Met, while the East Lancashire Railway’s Santa Specials offer a nostalgic ride through the holiday season.
The trail requires no app to join, families can simply scan any QR code along the trail to start. Those who finish will receive a downloadable festive e-book and earn the title of Official Elf Helper.
