Two new public artworks have been unveiled in Prestwich, one at the Creative Living Centre on Bury New Road and another at Prestwich Metrolink stop on Fairfax Road as part of a collaborative community art project.
The project was delivered in partnership between the Creative Living Centre, Prestwich Arts Festival, local artists, Bee Network and Keolis Amey. The unveiling event was attended by local residents, members, volunteers and representatives from Bury VCFA, including Volunteer Development Officer Adam.
At the Creative Living Centre, members and volunteers created a large mosaic for the front of the building with the guidance of local artist Caroline Coates. The design features a tree from the centre’s logo that also resembles a hand. Participants chose additional symbols, bees, flowers, hearts and cups of tea, to reflect the centre’s emphasis on community and holistic care.
Participants began by making individual practice mosaics to develop skills. The full mosaic was completed over approximately seven weeks. The group followed a process that included outlining the design, choosing colours, placing and sticking tiles, and filling background space with white tiles to make the imagery stand out.
Members and volunteers who contributed to the mosaic included: Julie, Rebecca, Roger, Rhonda, Anna P, Bruce, Anna L, Kevin, Khalid, Jaisil, Margaret, Lynsey, Donna, June, Shoshana, Rachael, Poppy and Flora.
The mural at Prestwich Metrolink stop was part of the same project and was unveiled alongside the mosaic. Both artworks aim to enhance public space and promote creativity within Prestwich.
The project received partial funding from the Parklife Community Fund, which is operated in collaboration with Manchester, Bury and Rochdale councils. The fund has provided over £394,000 between 2017 and 2024 to support local groups, with a focus on those working in parks, open spaces or with young people.
The mosaic is now installed at the front of the Creative Living Centre on Bury New Road, and the mural can be viewed at Prestwich Metrolink stop on Fairfax Road.
