Mill Gate Shopping Centre is inviting residents to help create a striking wall of remembrance this November, made entirely from handmade poppies in support of the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal.
For every handmade poppy submitted, Mill Gate will donate 50p to the Poppy Appeal, which provides vital support for serving members of the Armed Forces, veterans and their families.
Shoppers, schools, community groups and families are all encouraged to take part by crafting poppies of any design, from paper and felt to crochet, knitted or recycled creations. The suggested size is between 6 and 12 cm across, and contributors are asked to add a small stem, loop or safety pin where possible to make them easier to attach to the display.
Angela Tierney, centre manager at Mill Gate, said:
“The Poppy Appeal is such an important cause, and we’re proud to give our community the chance to take part in something truly meaningful. Every poppy, whether it’s lovingly handcrafted by a schoolchild, a veteran or a grandparent, will form part of a stunning tribute to those who have served. Together, we can create something really special.”
People can also personalise their poppies with a name or short message on the back in memory of someone special.
Handmade poppies can be handed in at Mill Gate’s Customer Services desk until Thursday 31 October 2025. The completed wall will be unveiled in November and shared on the centre’s website and social media channels.
Mill Gate, which already plays a key role in community events, hopes the project will bring together residents of all ages while raising funds for the appeal.
