Rochdale Harriers gathered to celebrate a remarkable milestone for one of the town’s most respected sporting figures.
Members of Rochdale Harriers came together on Sunday, 27 July, to honour club president Colin Robinson, who is celebrating an extraordinary 70 years as a member.
The special gathering at St Vincent’s Parish Centre in Norden drew over 100 attendees, including fellow athletes, family, old racing rivals and civic guests, all keen to recognise the contribution Colin has made to both the club and the wider running community.

Widely regarded as one of Rochdale’s greatest sporting ambassadors, Colin’s name has long been etched into the town’s athletic history. In his prime, he raced at international level in cross country and remains a club record-holder to this day. Yet his legacy stretches far beyond race results.
Together with his wife Brenda, Colin has devoted decades to volunteering behind the scenes, helping organise and support events not just for Rochdale Harriers, but across the North West. Their efforts have spanned road races, fell events, track meets and cross country competitions – always championing the grassroots side of the sport.
The celebration was filled with memories of past races and shared camaraderie. Mayor Janet Emsley attended to congratulate Colin and presented him with a painting of Rochdale Town Hall. In a surprise gesture, she also accepted honorary membership of the Harriers.
Speaking at the event, club members described Colin as a role model whose quiet commitment and good humour have helped shape the identity of the Harriers across generations.
While the spotlight was firmly on Colin, Harriers athletes were also in action elsewhere over the weekend. Club members took part in regional races and national endurance events, including track and fell races, and even an Ironman triathlon.

Several athletes marked personal milestones, and their performances continue to reflect the spirit and dedication embodied by the club’s longest-serving member.
