A special event celebrating positive ageing and tackling ageism brought people together from across Rochdale and Greater Manchester this week.
The 'Celebrating Ageing, Challenging Ageism' event took place at River Beal Cafe and Community Hub in Milnrow on Monday 9 June, coinciding with Age Without Limits Day.
Hosted by social care provider Future Directions CIC and funded by the Age Without Limits campaign, the event welcomed over 35 guests of all ages. Attendees included local volunteers and community members, all coming together to highlight the message that growing older can be a fulfilling and joyful experience.
Guests enjoyed a traditional afternoon tea while taking part in creative and reflective activities, including decorating memory boxes and sharing childhood photos. Rochdale Local Studies contributed to the day by providing nostalgic photographs and items from the past, sparking conversation and connection among attendees.

The Mayor and Consort of Rochdale, Janet and Ken Emsley, were present to open the event with a speech that underscored the importance of community and dignity in later life. Paula Braynion, Managing Director of Future Directions CIC, also spoke about the organisation’s commitment to supporting inclusive community events.
“We were honoured to have the Mayor with us at our event, which brought the local community together to celebrate how ageing can be a positive experience with the right support and community around you,” said Paula.
River Beal Cafe and Community Hub continues to host regular activities to support community inclusion and wellbeing. More information can be found on their website: futuredirectionscic.co.uk
