Bury’s new food market will be named after the town’s first shop to sell black pudding, the council has confirmed.
The new ‘flexi-hall’ at Bury Market will be named Casewells, after the spot on Union Street believed to be the first to sell the local delicacy in 1810.
The shop was demolished in 1968. But locals have decided via a public consultation to give the name a second run as the new multi-purpose building currently under construction in the town centre.
Midlands Events Bury Ltd (MEB) has also been selected as the potential operator for the venue, which will serve food, drinks and operate as an events hall. The major hospitality company also run Queens Market in Rhyl, which opened in 2025 with ‘full trader occupancy and strong visitor numbers’, according to the council.
Councillors will meet at Cabinet next week on Wednesday, February 11, to discuss the decision. If approved, MEB will manage the venue ahead of its completion in summer 2026 and planned opening during the autumn, and take on a 15-year-lease.
Casewells will include 12 food and retail units, a central bar and a stage for performances and community events.
Councillor Eamonn O’Brien, council leader and cabinet member for strategic growth, described the developments as ‘an exciting milestone’. He added: “Casewells will play a key role in strengthening Bury town centre, supporting our night‑time economy and building on the success of our world‑famous market and other town centre businesses and attractions. Subject to Cabinet approval, appointing an experienced operator like Midland Events will ensure the venue launches with a vibrant and high‑quality offer.”
Jordan Burnett, director of MEB said he was ‘delighted’ to be considered as the operator, and believed the new hall has ‘huge potential to bring together great food, culture and community activity’.
