Shoppers were given a taste of healthy and affordable food when they visited the Cook Well for Less stall on Bury Market.
Council teams gave cookery demonstrations using fresh but low-cost ingredients available on the market. They also gave out advice on how to reduce food waste and save money, and recipe cards for people to try out at home.
The chefs rustled up a variety of dishes, from chilli to chickpea curry, from burritos to broccoli and pea soup. They also demonstrated how basic items such as tomatoes could be spiced up and used as a base for a number of meals, such as soup and pasta sauce, and kept for days.
Councillor Charlotte Morris, cabinet member for culture and the economy, said: “We all know how much the price of food has been rising, so what better place to demonstrate how to cook well and save money than Bury Market?
“The day was great fun, and we hope many shoppers have gone away with handy tips which are nutritious, tasty and good value.”
