Bury Hospice is set to receive £46,591 as part of a nationwide £25 million uplift to support vital end-of-life care across the UK.
The funding, confirmed by Minister for Care Stephen Kinnock, is part of the largest investment in hospices in a generation, totalling £125 million over the past two years. It will be distributed via Hospice UK to 158 adult and children’s hospices across England.
Bury Hospice will use its share of the funding to improve patient rooms, carry out urgent building repairs, develop outdoor spaces, and upgrade IT systems. The investment aims to enhance the comfort and dignity of care for patients receiving palliative treatment both at the hospice and in the community.
James Frith, MP for Bury North, welcomed the news and shared his personal connection to the hospice’s work.
“Bury Hospice provides vital care and support for people in Bury North with life-limiting conditions, as well as for their loved ones,” he said.
“This matters to me personally. Like many families in our town, mine has benefitted from the compassion and care the hospice offers. In Parliament, I have consistently championed its work, and I am proud to have brought together hospices and MPs to strengthen that support.
“I am pleased that this Labour Government is backing palliative and end-of-life care, and this announcement will make a real difference to Bury Hospice and the invaluable role it plays in our community.”
Stephen Kinnock said the funding would allow hospices to carry out improvements without delay.
“I thank Hospice UK for facilitating this so quickly so hospices can swiftly contract any vital work and upgrades,” he said.
The Minister also confirmed the Government will publish a new modern services framework for palliative and end-of-life care later this year. The plan aims to tackle issues like unequal access, regional variation in quality, avoidable hospital admissions, and 24/7 care gaps.
The framework is being developed with input from the sector and is part of a wider push to shift more care out of hospitals and into community settings.
