A new social group for autistic adults is being launched in Rochdale following calls for more tailored social opportunities in the borough.
Responding to feedback from the Autism Co-Production Network, Rochdale Gateway Leisure is joining forces with I AM, Celebrating Autism Greater Manchester to deliver the new initiative.
The group will meet fortnightly at Gateway’s base on Kenion Street, with the first session taking place on Wednesday 9 July, from 2pm to 4pm.
Roxanne Sharp, Training Manager at Rochdale Gateway Leisure, said: “Autistic adults told us there’s nothing social just for them. So, we’re collaborating with I AM to create a space that’s relaxed, welcoming, and designed around their needs.”
Meetings will initially be held every two weeks but could become weekly depending on interest.
The venue includes a pool table, electronic and board games, a cafe area with reasonably priced refreshments, a quiet room, and even a disco zone with karaoke for those in the mood for music. The sessions will be free of structured agendas, encouraging organic social interaction.
“This is about friendship, belonging and fun,” Roxanne added. “We want people to come and enjoy being themselves in a supportive space.”
The Autism Co-Production Network, which meets bi-monthly at the same location, attracts between 15 and 30 participants, including autistic individuals, family members, and carers.
