New houses for affordable rent and shared ownership are to be built on derelict land at Fletcher Fold in Bury.
The project is for 26 carbon-neutral homes on the site of the former Millwood School, which was demolished in 2018.
The £4 million scheme will be delivered by the council’s partner Six Town Housing following the local authority’s successful bid for brownfield land funding to remediate the site.
Councillor Clare Cummins, cabinet member for housing services, said: “An important part of our Bury Let’s Do It Strategy is to deliver enough houses, and of the right type, to meet the needs of present and future generations.
“This is the latest in a series of new housing developments we have approved, all of them on brownfield land.
“The development of the Fletcher Fold site will regenerate the area and improve the local environment, providing a much-needed 26 affordable family homes – 18 for affordable rent, and eight for shared ownership.”
Cllr Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, added: “The council has set a target to be carbon-neutral by 2039. These new homes at Fletcher Fold will be the borough’s first flagship project of this type and pave the way for all housing to be net zero by 2028. They are being built to low-carbon standards and will be ‘all electric’ incorporating sustainable renewable technologies such as solar panels and air source heat pumps to reduce fuel bills and cut carbon emissions. The latest rise in fuel bills highlights the need to make sure that all future houses are zero carbon.”
