Dozens of dogs and puppies have been rescued and rehomed following a Greater Manchester Police (GMP) investigation into suspected illegal puppy breeding and sales in Bury.
Officers from GMP’s Bury district, working with the RSPCA, seized 71 dogs and puppies after raiding two properties in the Radcliffe area. The operation was launched after a member of the public raised concerns about the welfare of animals linked to illicit puppy sales.
The animals were found in what police described as "extremely bad conditions". They have since been rehomed through the RSPCA.
Two men, aged 51 and 37, and two women, aged 50 and 31, were arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty. All four have been released on bail pending further investigation.
Inspector Halligan of GMP said: “Following intelligence received from a member of the public, we have been able to seize dogs and puppies, most of which were kept in extremely bad conditions, and alongside RSPCA we have given them new leases of life.”
Officers also recovered equipment believed to have been used for fraudulent and unlawful puppy breeding and sales.
Police are urging anyone with concerns about illegal puppy breeding or animal welfare to contact GMP online or by calling 101. Animal welfare concerns can also be reported to the RSPCA.
