A group of young performers are set to appear alongside experienced actors in a new staging of Antigone at a local theatre in Ramsbottom.
The Summerseat Players will stage a modern adaptation of the Greek tragedy Antigone at the Theatre Royal in Ramsbottom, featuring members of its Young Company in supporting roles.
The production is based on the original play by Sophocles, with a contemporary version written by poet Hollie McNish. It centres on a conflict between Antigone and her uncle Kreon over the burial of her brother, with themes that have been adapted to reflect modern society.
Director Ella Dufton has drawn on the late 1970s punk music scene as inspiration for the staging, aiming to present the story in a way that connects with a present day audience.
Young performers from The Summerseat Players Young Company will form part of the chorus, with some appearing on the main stage for the first time. The group meets weekly to develop drama skills with support from experienced actors and coaches, and members are selected to take part in main season productions when roles arise.
The theatre group has previously supported performers who have gone on to professional careers, including West End actor Kate OFlynn and television actor Ralf Little.
Artistic director Stephen Davies said he was pleased to see young members progressing into larger productions. He said supporting emerging talent remains an important part of the theatre’s work.
Society chair Jon Walker said the production offers a fresh interpretation of a well known story and reflects the group’s commitment to varied and engaging performances.
Antigone will run from 22 March to 28 March, with tickets available online and from the theatre box office during opening hours.
