Rochdale Women's comeback falls short against Farnham Town

Rochdale Women were beaten 3 2 by Farnham Town in their opening pre season friendly at the Crown Oil Arena on Saturday despite producing a spirited second half fightback.

After a quiet opening, Rochdale created the first opportunity when Sophie Coates headed Alicia Barnett's free kick onto the roof of the net.

Annie Taylor also tried her luck from distance after spotting Farnham goalkeeper Beth Bye off her line, but the effort was gathered safely.

The visitors opened the scoring when Rachel Manley curled a finish into the top corner from inside the penalty area. Goalkeeper Leah Jackson prevented further goals with a series of saves before Farnham extended their advantage.

Ashlee Hincks scored twice in quick succession, first directly from a corner before adding a second with a strike that found the inside of the post to make it 3 0.

Rochdale responded before half time when Taylor intercepted a loose pass and calmly slotted home to reduce the deficit.

Lee Atkinson's side carried that momentum into the second half and made it 3 2 within minutes of the restart. Barnett cut inside from the left before curling an impressive effort into the far top corner.

Both teams continued to create chances as the game opened up. Libby Doyle and Kelly Whelan went close for Farnham, while substitute Katie King fired wide for Dale after a cross fell kindly inside the penalty area.

Rochdale pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages and Coates forced a fine save with a curling effort, but Farnham held on to claim victory.

Despite the defeat, Dale showed resilience after falling three goals behind and finished the match strongly in front of a healthy crowd at the Crown Oil Arena.
