Two men have been jailed for over 13 years following a fatal collision in Bury that claimed the life of a pedestrian, Gavin Andrews.
On Tuesday 9 November 2021, Faizaan Haider and Suaiel Haider had attended a wake in Bury, during which both were seen on CCTV drinking alcohol throughout the afternoon.
At approximately 9:30pm that evening, Faizaan Haider, 25, drove a BMW along Walmersley Road, Bury, with Suaiel Haider, 43, as a passenger. Just minutes after setting off, Faizaan Haider struck Mr Andrews at high speed outside a takeaway as the victim exited the shop with food.
Instead of stopping, the pair fled the scene. Shortly afterwards, they were caught on camera setting fire to the vehicle on Falshaw Drive in an attempt to destroy evidence.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, but despite the efforts of paramedics and members of the public, Mr Andrews was pronounced dead.
Following a detailed investigation by Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, during which both men tried to distance themselves from the crime and shift blame to another person, they were convicted and sentenced today (Friday 25 April 2025) at court.
Faizaan Haider, of Mosley Street, Bury, was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and causing death whilst uninsured. He was sentenced to nine years and three months in prison and disqualified from driving for three years, extended by a further four years and seven months until he passes an extended re-test.
Suaiel Haider, of Langdale Mews, Bury, was convicted of perverting the course of justice and sentenced to four years and three months in prison.
Detective Sergeant Andrew Page of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Today is the conclusion of a three and a half year investigation, and I hope this sentence can provide some more closure to the family of Gavin. I would like to thank Gavin’s family for their patience and dignity throughout this difficult time.
“These men have shown no remorse. They fled the scene, attempted to destroy evidence, and refused to take responsibility for the harm they caused. Their cowardly actions prolonged the anguish for Gavin’s loved ones, but today they have faced justice.
“I hope this case highlights the dedication of our officers to bring offenders to justice who use the roads of Greater Manchester illegally and recklessly.”
