Two men have been arrested after a burglary in Oldham led to a 10-minute police pursuit reaching speeds of over 100mph.
The incident began shortly after 10:30am on Monday 1 December, when residents reported hearing a smash and saw three masked men forcing entry into a property in Oldham. Two watches were stolen during the break-in and the suspects attempted to steal the homeowner’s Hyundai but were thwarted by the car’s immobiliser.
Greater Manchester Police’s Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit (TVIU) swiftly identified a vehicle linked to the burglary and spotted it travelling through West Yorkshire towards Bradford.
When officers attempted to stop the car, the driver failed to comply, sparking a pursuit that lasted around ten minutes. During the chase, the vehicle reportedly reached speeds of up to 105mph through busy morning traffic.
The car was eventually abandoned at a caravan site, where two of the suspects attempted to flee on foot. Officers detained both men, one of whom was found hiding inside a caravan.
A 36-year-old and a 44-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of burglary, dangerous driving and failing to stop. A third suspect remains at large.
Sergeant Bobby Nasim of the TVIU said: “Crimes like this cause real distress to homeowners and the wider community. Within an hour of this incident being reported, we had made two arrests.
“The suspects showed no regard for public safety, reaching speeds of up to 105mph during busy morning traffic as they tried to escape.”
GMP is urging anyone with information about the third suspect to come forward. Members of the public can contact officers by calling 0161 856 4521, quoting log 894 of 01/12/25.
