Police have introduced emergency stop and search powers across parts of Chadderton and Oldham after three separate assaults left three men in hospital within just over 90 minutes.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that a Section 60 order is now in force until 6.45pm on Friday 13 February, giving officers enhanced powers to stop and search individuals in a large area covering both districts.
The first incident was reported at around 5.50pm, today, Thursday 12 February in the Butler Green area of Chadderton. A 26-year-old man was taken to the hospital with injuries described as potentially life-changing. No arrests have been made in connection with that assault and the scene has since been closed.
A second assault took place shortly before 7.30pm in a retail park car park on Chadderton Way. A 21-year-old man suffered a stab wound to the leg and injuries to his head. Police said his injuries are not currently believed to be life threatening or life changing. The car park remains closed while enquiries continue.
A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault and violent disorder in relation to this incident. He remains in custody for questioning.
Just after 7.30pm, a third man was stabbed on Featherstall Road North. He is in hospital in a stable condition. Officers said the full extent of his injuries has not yet been established. No arrests have been made in connection with this incident and a scene remains in place.
Detectives have not yet confirmed whether the three assaults are linked. Officers believe the attacks were targeted but said enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.
Detective Sergeant Jennifer O Brien from Oldham CID said officers are working at pace to identify suspects and support the injured men. She acknowledged there will be concern within the community and said residents should expect to see an increased police presence while investigations continue.
She added that knife crime has no place in Oldham or Greater Manchester and confirmed neighbourhood teams are working alongside the force wide knife crime team, Operation Venture, to disrupt those carrying weapons.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
