Rochdale Council slams reckless drivers as 435 ignore school crossing patrols in just five weeks

Rochdale Borough Council says 435 motorists failed to stop for school crossing patrols in just five weeks, with the worst incidents recorded in Sandy Lane and Sheriff Street.

Rochdale Council has hit out at “deeply irresponsible” motorists after revealing that 435 drivers failed to stop for school crossing patrols in just five weeks.

The figures show a pattern of reckless driving near schools, with the worst-hit areas being Sandy Lane (85 incidents), Sheriff Street (68), Whitworth Road (55), and Birch Avenue (39). Council officials say the shocking numbers are endangering children, parents, carers, and the crossing patrol staff themselves.

Every failure to stop has been reported to Greater Manchester Police, and a number of drivers have received police cautions over the past year.

In a statement, the council warned:

“Failing to stop for a school crossing patrol is not only illegal, it’s potentially deadly. Our patrol officers are there to protect children and families. Ignoring their authority puts lives at risk.”

The warning has sparked a mixed response on Facebook, with several residents blaming poor patrol practices for near-misses and confusion on the roads.

Samantha Barlow wrote:

“Some patrols need a bit of training too and not just given a stick. Our lollipop stops traffic while the kids and parents are still five minutes down the road.”

Janet Mason said visibility on Whitworth Road is dangerously poor due to parked cars and bin collections, adding:

“Maybe they should be on the other side of the road helping people to cross.”

Meanwhile, Kelly Lawn flagged ongoing issues on Sheriff Street:

“The patrol could do with being moved down a little further before another accident occurs, I see near misses every day.”

Residents are urged to report dangerous driving or unsafe crossing behaviour to both the council and Greater Manchester Police.
