New pedestrian crossing to improve safety on Halifax Road despite mixed public reaction

Halifax Road, Rochdale

A new pedestrian crossing is being installed on Halifax Road, Rochdale, as part of efforts to improve safety along the busy dual carriageway where several pedestrian collisions have occurred in recent years.

The crossing, located near Smallbridge Library, is funded by the Bee Network and aims to provide a safer alternative to the existing subway. As part of the project, Rochdale Borough Council will also resurface footpaths and the road, enhance drainage, and improve safety at the Buckley Lane and Spring Mill Walk junctions.

The works are scheduled to continue until Monday 15 September 2025, with some lane closures expected to cause delays for motorists travelling through the area.

A council spokesperson said: “This new crossing will help reduce risk for pedestrians by giving them a safe route across a busy road. We understand there will be some disruption during the works, but the long-term safety improvements are essential.”

However, the announcement has sparked debate among residents on social media. Several commenters questioned the need for a surface-level crossing when an underpass is already available.

Jeanne Tyson commented: “I would have thought the subway was safer. Going back in time to a zebra crossing. That is why the subway was put in.” Chloe Bairstow added: “The traffic is making life hell for everyone.”

Some users suggested alternative measures, such as speed cameras, would have been more effective. Antony Roberts wrote: “You have subways all along that road. Put a speed camera up to stop the idiots ploughing up and down there – job done.”

Other concerns included increased congestion and confusion over the project timeline. Craig Owen noted: “The traffic coming out of Littleborough has been horrendous since the lane closure. I hope you have plans to mitigate this... Also I notice you said it finishes in September, when earlier it was August. Which is it?”

Despite the criticism, others pointed to the necessity of action on Halifax Road, which has been described as hazardous. Gary Henderson commented on the risks of reckless driving: “Just waiting for the first pedestrians to be mowed down by the Audi BMW brigade.”

The council has not publicly responded to the individual comments but has provided further updates on its website, including diversion details for lane closures.
