One of the East Lancashire Railway’s most devoted figures, Bob Johnson, has died peacefully aged 93, after dedicating over three decades to the heritage railway.
Tributes have poured in following the death of Bob Johnson, the East Lancashire Railway’s (ELR) longest serving volunteer, who passed away peacefully at Fairfield Hospital.
Mr Johnson, who lived in Bury, recently celebrated his 93rd birthday and marked 36 years of service to the ELR. He leaves behind his wife Gill.
Described as a “giant of the ELR” by Chairman Mike Kelly, Bob was known for his immense contributions to the development and preservation of the heritage railway.
“Bob was a giant of the ELR, dedicating so much of his life to develop, improve and preserve the heritage railway,” said Mr Kelly. “He will be hugely missed by so many staff and volunteers past and present.”
Over the years, Bob became a familiar and beloved figure on the railway, donning costumes for the first Santa Specials more than 30 years ago, delighting children as a storyteller during early Thomas the Tank Engine events, and serving as a director and ambassador, even hosting visitors from China.
In 1993, he founded the ELR’s midweek maintenance team known as the ‘Hit Squad’, where his leadership, humour and storytelling became legendary. “It was my privilege to work with Bob on the ‘Hit Squad’ and who is, quite rightly, acknowledged as the ‘Godfather’ of the East Lancashire Railway,” added Mr Kelly.
His dedication did not go unnoticed, with colleagues across the railway hailing him as a mentor, friend, and source of inspiration.
“Bob was so generous with his time, always helping others,” said one volunteer. “He shaped the spirit of volunteering on the ELR, inclusive, cheerful, and full of heart.”
The ELR has extended its condolences to Gill and the Johnson family during this difficult time, with tributes expected to continue across the heritage community.
