A man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life following a fire at a residential property in Bury in the early hours of last Sunday (18 January 2026).

Emergency services were called at around 2am after reports of a fire at an address on South Terrace. Officers attended alongside Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service after concerns were raised about a blaze at the property.

No injuries were reported and all occupants were confirmed to be safe.

Detectives launched a joint investigation with fire service colleagues to establish the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding it.

Greater Manchester Police have now confirmed that a man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in police custody while enquiries continue.

The investigation is ongoing and officers have not released further details at this stage.

Detective Superintendent Stuart Round from GMP's Bury district said: “We have been working incredibly hard to identify who we believe may be responsible for this incident last weekend and have now made an arrest.

“We are continuing to keep an open mind as to why this incident happened but want to reassure the public that we will not tolerate these types of incidents in Bury. We will investigate, arrest and prosecute those who think they can spread fear throughout our community.”

Officers are still urging anyone with information about this incident to come forward. This includes anyone who witnessed the incident or have any CCTV/dashcam footage.
