Man's body found in burning car in Portadown, say Northern Ireland police

A police investigation is under way after a man's body was found inside a burning car in Northern Ireland.

The fire was reported about 10pm on Saturday night in Portadown, Co Armagh, about 30 miles (48km) south of Belfast.

Chief Inspector Joe Tierney of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said the blaze was put out by firefighters and the victim was declared dead at the scene.

Police, who are investigating how the fire started, were joined at the site in the Harford Street area by ammunition technical officers who carried out "relevant inquiries".

The fire caused "significant damage" to the vehicle, while a nearby property also suffered "scorch damage".

Mr Tierney said a post-mortem examination will confirm how the man died and appealed for any witnesses to contact them.

DUP Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart called the man's death "tragic", expressing her condolences to the victim's family and loved ones.

"A police cordon remains in place and the circumstances surrounding the man's death are not yet known.

"It is extremely important that the PSNI are given the time and space necessary to carry out a full and thorough investigation."

Ms Lockhart urged people not to speculate about what happened on social media, "particularly around the identity of the deceased or the circumstances surrounding what has happened".

"Speculation helps no one and can cause enormous additional distress to a family at an already incredibly difficult time."
