Teenager dies after getting into difficulty in Cumbrian lake

A teenager has died after getting into difficulty in the water at a Lake District beauty spot.

Emergency services were called at around 4.35pm on Saturday to Grasmere lake following reports that a young man had got into difficulty in the water, Cumbria Police said.

A 19-year-old man was taken to hospital and later died.

Police said the death is not being treated as suspicious and urged anyone with information to come forward.

The force added: "Police would also like to thank those who came to the teenager's aid, including those who helped get him to shore."

It comes as a search is under way for a woman who went into the sea in Weymouth.

Dorset Police received a report at 11.05pm on Saturday from a member of the public raising concern for the welfare of a woman who had been seen entering the water from Weymouth Esplanade. She is not believed to have returned.

The woman is described as being of average build and having long hair.

When she entered the water, she was wearing a long flowing dress, which is a lighter colour at the top, police said.

Officers have been carrying out searches in the area with the support of the National Police Air Service helicopter, HM Coastguard and the RNLI.

Inspector Mark Latter, of Dorset Police, said: "We are growing increasingly concerned for the woman's welfare and are carrying out enquiries to locate her.

"The woman was on her own at the time of the incident and no belongings have been found following a search of the beach area."

Police have appealed for anyone who may have seen the woman in the Weymouth Esplanade area at the time to come forward.

Dozens of people have died after getting into trouble in open water this year, as the UK prepares for a fifth heatwave in the coming week.

Two record-breaking heatwaves in May and June led to more than 2,800 excess deaths.

On Wednesday, a body was recovered in the search for a 13-year-old boy who got into difficulty in the sea off the East Yorkshire coast, Humberside Police said.

A 14-year-old boy also drowned after going into the water in east London on Monday.

The National Water Safety Forum reported there were 202 water-related fatalities across the whole of last year in the UK, adding that 2026 data will not be published until May next year.
