Boy, 13, arrested after petrol bombs, bottles and fireworks thrown at police in Londonderry

A 13-year-old boy has been arrested after petrol bombs, bottles and fireworks were thrown at police vehicles in Londonderry.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said it followed antisocial behaviour in the Bishop Street, The Fountain and Nailors Row areas of Derry in recent weeks.

In a statement, the force said they received a report at around 5.30pm on Tuesday about a number of masked youths in the area.

It said officers closed Bishop Street to deal with the disorder.

"A number of glass bottles were thrown, with fireworks also set off and petrol bombs and masonry thrown at police vehicles.

"A 13-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of riotous behaviour and has since been released on bail to allow for further police enquiries.

"An investigation is underway to identify all those involved, and we will take action against anyone identified as committing offences."

The force described this as part of a pattern of disorder in recent weeks.

"A number of individuals, believed to be youths and some masked, were involved on the evenings of 20th and 21st April, 4th May [Monday] and again tonight [Tuesday]," said Derry City and Strabane Inspector Ferriby.

Separately on Friday evening, the PSNI condemned "reckless behaviour" in a different part of the city, where petrol bombs were thrown at officers.

Officers said a group of around 15 young people, with faces covered, gathered at the interface in the Irish Street area while a band parade was passing through.

They threw "paint bombs, heavy masonry and petrol bombs" at officers and "two police vehicles sustained minor damage".
