Forward signs until end of season as club bolsters attacking options with familiar face
Rochdale AFC has confirmed the return of forward Tyler Smith, re-signing the 26-year-old on a short-term deal until the end of the current season.
Smith previously featured for Dale in 2020, making four appearances and scoring a crucial winning goal against Shrewsbury Town during his brief spell. His return comes as the team continues a strong start to the 2025/26 season.
“I’ve been itching to get in and I’m glad it’s been sorted,” Smith said following the announcement. “I know a lot of the people already here, which is a positive. The lads have been flying so far this season, and I really want to be part of it.”
The Sheffield-born striker, who is also the older brother of Dale’s vice captain Kyron Gordon, began his career in the Sheffield United youth setup, where he played alongside Dale midfielder Harvey Gilmour. He went on to sign professional terms with the Blades and enjoyed loan spells at Barrow, Doncaster Rovers and Bristol Rovers before his first move to Spotland.
After leaving Rochdale in 2020, Smith spent time on loan at Swindon Town before joining Hull City in a permanent move in 2021. He made over 40 appearances for the Championship side before finishing the 2022/23 season with Oxford United.
A three-year deal at Bradford City followed, where he scored 12 goals in his debut season. Smith then returned to Barrow on loan, linking up with Jason Taylor, who is now Rochdale’s assistant head coach.
Smith will wear the number 38 shirt and is expected to be available for selection in the upcoming fixture.
