Rochdale Masters has marked a major milestone after completing its first international tour with a visit to Perpignan in southern France.
The trip saw members of the over 35s rugby league club take part in Masters Rugby League activities while experiencing one of Europe's most established rugby regions.
Rochdale Masters, the only over 35s men's rugby league club in the Rochdale area, travelled to Perpignan for what the club described as a historic occasion in its development.
The tour combined rugby league, cultural exchange and social activities, bringing together players from across the borough.
A key part of the visit was a fixture against French Masters side Les Galia Tots. The match reflected the principles of Masters Rugby League, which places participation, enjoyment, friendship and respect at the centre of the game.
The fixture featured players with extensive experience in the sport, including former England, Wigan and Catalans captain Sam Tomkins, and was followed by the opportunity to watch Catalans Dragons take on Castleford Tigers.
While results are not the primary focus of Masters Rugby League, club members described the occasion as a proud moment that highlighted the growing popularity of the format.
Away from the pitch, participants spent time exploring Perpignan and learning more about the region's rugby traditions and Catalan culture.
Tour captain Steve Wood said, “This tour has been a tremendous success and a significant milestone for our club. To travel abroad together, play alongside fellow Masters players and build relationships through rugby has been an incredible experience. Everyone involved represented Rochdale Masters with pride, and we are grateful to our hosts for their exceptional hospitality and friendship.”
The club also thanked organisers, sponsors and members of Les Galia Tots for helping make the tour possible.
Rochdale Masters said the success of the trip has generated enthusiasm for future international exchanges as the club continues to promote participation, friendship and community spirit through rugby league.
