A new initiative aimed at tackling homelessness and boosting wellbeing has been launched by Rochdale AFC Community Trust.
In partnership with local charity Petrus. ‘Rochdale AFC Changing Lives’ will offer free, inclusive football sessions for people who are homeless or living in supported accommodation.
The programme goes beyond sport, aiming to build confidence, improve mental and physical health, and help participants connect with others in a supportive environment. It will also offer access to volunteering, education, and employment pathways to help people move towards long-term stability.
The partnership follows the success of a joint ‘Sleep Out’ event in August 2023, where participants spent the night at the Crown Oil Arena to raise awareness and funds. Almost £8,000 was raised on the night, and Rochdale AFC Community Trust has since used its share to help launch the Changing Lives initiative.
Scott Webster, Deputy Director of Rochdale AFC Community Trust, said:
“This is a great opportunity for both charities to continue working together to help combat homelessness within the borough of Rochdale. Rochdale AFC Changing Lives will give individuals the chance to improve their health and wellbeing, develop a sense of community and belonging, and gain valuable skills for future progression.”
Jane Crompton, Service Manager at Petrus, added:
“Taking part in sports like football can have a huge impact on mental health and wellbeing, but many people experiencing homelessness face barriers to taking part. Our partnership with Rochdale AFC Community Trust helps remove those barriers, giving people a safe, welcoming place to get active, build connections and look after their wellbeing out on the pitch.”
