Pedro hat-trick fires Bury to 5-2 win over Wythenshawe Town as Shakers go top

Bury had another stellar opening 45 minutes to thank as the Shakers cruised to a 5-2 victory over Wythenshawe Town on Tuesday night at Gigg Lane. DJ Pedro scored a hat-trick and Rustam Stepans grabbed a brace to build a lead the visitors could not overcome.

From the very start Bury were on the attack. Less than a minute into the match Kieran Glynn pulled the ball back to DJ Pedro. The Shakers centre forward flubbed his effort and the defence would clear their lines.

In the sixth minute Bury broke the deadlock Kai Evans sending a lovely throughball to Pedro who blasted beyond the keeper at the near post to give the Shakers the lead.

Minutes later the advantage was doubled. Stepans played through by Bebeto Gomes was granted far too much time and space. Fans urged him to shoot and he did just that finding the top corner with ease.

Having established an early lead the hosts pressed on for more. Kai Evans came close to a goal of his own shooting wide after getting on the end of a Glynn free kick. Fogerty and Glynn both put chances wide of goal while Gomes, bursting into the box chose to pass when he perhaps ought to have gone for goal himself. At the other end Jack Taylor came close to grabbing a goal back, his header forcing a good save from Mitch Allen.

The Town defence under near constant pressure couldn’t hold out. Pedro played in by Glynn was gifted a one on one opportunity and took it finding the bottom corner to make it 3-0 to Bury.

Pedro then completed a first half hat-trick finishing into the bottom corner after a killer pass by Evans. Just as on Saturday the Shakers found themselves four goals to the good a little after the half hour mark.

After the break Wythenshawe Town made two changes one of whom very nearly scored immediately. Mitch Allen had to make himself big to block initial effort from Jonny Nixon before two rebounds had to be cleared away by the defence.

The home side responded, a Pedro cross from the left found Stepans who saw a header bounce off the crossbar before another pass by Pedro saw a Stepans shot pushed round the post by the Wythenshawe keeper Luke Hewitson. From the resulting corner kick substitute Gabe Johnson headed just over the goal.

The fifth goal was coming and arrived as a Gomes cross was only partially cleared and the ball fell kindly to Stepans. Given a clear view of goal he found the top corner once again to make it 5-0 to Bury.

There could have been even more goals, both Johnson and Pedro put good chances off target but gradually the hosts seemed to lose much of their previous impetus and after that began to see less possession as well.

From seemingly nowhere Wythenshawe Town claimed a goal back. A brilliantly taken free kick from Dylan Woods landed perfectly in the far corner beyond the reach of Allen.

Quickly Town claimed a second goal. A long ball forward was not cleared away and as the Bury defence waited for the ball to come to them Jonny Nixon slipped in to place an effort beyond Allen to score a soft goal.

When a counterattack by the away side lead to a well taken shot by Darius Smith  having to be saved by Mitch Allen there were concerns that an improbable nascent comeback was brewing. The Shakers defence held firm but the match ended with more of a whimper than a roar for a five goal performance from the home team.

The win sees Bury claim top spot for the first time this season though with further midweek matches to be played this initial spell at the top may not last long.

A long run of away matches now await the Shakers as fixtures come thick and fast. Though if Bury continue to repeat their performances from their last two matches over this busy period they should come through it well.
