Smooth policing operation as Courteeners appear at Heaton Park

How good it was that officers in attendance at Heaton Park yesterday (Friday 9 June 2023) ensured fans of The Courteeners could keep on chipping away throughout the night with a successful policing and security operation.

How good it was that officers in attendance at Heaton Park yesterday (Friday 9 June 2023) ensured fans of The Courteeners could keep on chipping away throughout the night with a successful policing and security operation.

It was the 15th anniversary of the band’s album St Jude, and thousands were in attendance for the Manchester band’s homecoming gig.

Officers were on hand to provide the notion of advice, assistance, and reassurance throughout the evening to anyone who may have had any problems during their time at the event.

In total, there were three arrests at the event; two people on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly, and one on suspicion of possession with intent to supply.

Two further arrests by officers – one on suspicion of driving under the influence and one under suspicion of possession with intent to supply – occurred nearby.

In conjunction with partners, officers assisted in everything from minor injuries to supporting traffic management in the aftermath of the event.

Superintendent Phil Spurgeon, from GMP’s City of Manchester District, said: “It was a great night with a fantastic atmosphere and it was amazing to see people coming together from all around to enjoy the gig.

“From a policing and security perspective, we are very happy with how the night played out. The overwhelming majority of attendees enjoyed themselves responsibly and had a great time. While we made a handful of arrests, those people were in the tiny minority and did not detract from the night.

“This was the opening act to a busy weekend across Greater Manchester and I hope people continue to enjoy themselves safely across the next couple of days.
