A man has today (Tuesday 29 April 2025) been sentenced to life imprisonment after pleading guilty to a serious assault that left a Salford man with devastating injuries.
Shannon Meaney (13/08/1990) of no fixed address, was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court and must serve a minimum of nine years before being eligible for parole.
The incident occurred in Clarendon Park, Salford, in February 2023. Following the attack, John Lowe, now in his 60s, suffered life-threatening injuries that have left him requiring permanent care.
Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Crime Division took on the case after John’s condition worsened. Through diligent investigative work, including extensive CCTV enquiries and forensic footwear comparisons, Meaney was identified, arrested, and charged.
Detective Chief Inspector Neil Higginson said: “Since day one, our focus has been on securing justice for John and his family. This was a brutal, cowardly attack that has had a profound effect on John's life and the lives of those who love him.
“I want to personally commend John's family, especially his daughter, for their bravery and unwavering support throughout this long and challenging investigation.”
In her victim impact statement, John’s daughter reflected: “Our dad was the life and soul of the party, a man full of energy and loved by his community. This attack has turned him into a shell of the man he once was, and it has changed our lives forever.”
