Terror investigation continues after attack outside Heaton Park synagogue

Counter Terrorism Policing North West (CTPNW) says its investigation into the terrorist attack outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Thursday is “continuing at pace.”

Six people arrested in the immediate days after the attack on suspicion of terrorism offences, with warrants of further detention granted yesterday (Saturday 4 October 2025) for four of them. This allows police to keep the suspects in custody for up to five more days while investigations continue.

Two individuals, an 18-year-old woman and 43-year-old man, were released without charge.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them directly through the Major Incident Public Portal, warning against speculation or sharing unverified claims online, which could hinder the inquiry and distress victims and the community further.

Detectives have also acknowledged the deep impact the attack has had on the local Jewish community, particularly for those who knew or had previous contact with the suspect, Jihad Al-Shamie.

Officers said they understand people are “coming to terms with the fact this horrifying attack has been perpetrated by somebody they recognise” and urged anyone struggling to seek support.

Earlier today, residents around the Middleton Road area in Crumpsall were allowed to return to their homes.

Police thanked the local community for their patience, understanding, and resilience. A reduced cordon remains in place while these enquiries carry on, and extra patrols and officers will remain in place to support the community during this time.

If you have information then please contact police via the Major Incident Public Portal which is available online here.
