Plans for how £20m of government funding will be used to regenerate Heywood have been approved, allowing projects to move forward.
Proposals submitted by the Heywood Town Board have been given approval by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, marking a key stage in the delivery of the Pride in Place programme.
The funding had already been allocated to Heywood, but required government agreement on how it would be spent before projects could begin.
The board, made up of local residents, businesses, council representatives and Heywood and Middleton MP Elsie Blundell, developed the plans following consultation with the community.
Projects set to be developed further include a grant scheme for local community initiatives, improvements to the town centre such as shop front upgrades, more arts and cultural events, and additional facilities for young people.
The proposals are based on priorities identified by residents and businesses, including strengthening the local economy, improving green spaces, celebrating heritage and helping people feel safer.
Brian Davies, chair of the Heywood Town Board, said the approval allows work to progress following input from the community. He said further consultation will take place in the coming months to refine the plans.
Initial funding has already supported improvements to Peine Square outside Heywood Civic, creating a new public space with seating, planting and areas for events.
Councillor Angela Brown, chair of Heywood township committee, said the plans reflect local priorities including culture, business growth and support for young people.
Elsie Blundell said the programme represents a long term commitment with projects shaped by residents and supported by government.
Further engagement with residents and businesses is planned, including targeted work with young people and underrepresented groups. The funding will be delivered in stages over the next ten years.
