Police given more time to question suspect after a car hit pedestrians in Derby

Police have been given more time to question a suspect after a car hit pedestrians outside a pub in Derby city centre.

The 36-year-old was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, causing serious injury through dangerous driving, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, and dangerous driving following the incident on Saturday evening.

He is still being held in custody after detectives were given until Tuesday evening to question him, Derbyshire Police said in a statement on Monday.

Seven people, including four men and three women aged between 36 and 52, were taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries after they were hit by a black Suzuki Swift in Friar Gate at about 9.30pm.

Three of them have since been discharged.

The suspect lives in Derby and has been in the UK for several years, but is originally from India.

He was arrested on the other side of the city centre seven minutes after the incident, according to Derby's police lead, Chief Superintendent Emma Aldred.

She said on Sunday: "He was safely stopped in Station Approach, where the bridge crosses over towards [Derby County FC stadium] Pride Park."

She said police believe it is an isolated incident and that there is no wider risk to the public.

Counter terrorism officers are part of the investigation into what happened, which is "common practice" for an incident of this nature and does not mean they believe it is terror-related, the force said. Police are still investigating potential motives.

Detectives are appealing to anyone with footage of the incident to contact them.
