Man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after five injured when car hit pedestrians in town centre

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a car hit a group of pedestrians, leaving one with life-threatening injuries.

Police said the incident involved a red Vauxhall Astra in Arnold, Nottinghamshire, at 1.12am on Saturday, following an "altercation" in the town centre a short time earlier.

Several people were said to have been struck by the vehicle, with one man suffering life-threatening injuries and four other men left with less serious injuries.

The car was abandoned at the scene, with the driver fleeing on foot, Nottinghamshire Police said.

A 40-year-old man was then arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, the force said on Saturday evening.

The incident is not being treated as terror related and counter terror officers are not investigating, police added.

Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "There is no indication at this stage of any ongoing threat to the wider public.

"However, we understand the incident will cause concern in the community.

"Officers will remain at the scene today to carry out further inquiries, speak to local people and offer reassurance.

"It is also important anyone with information, or relevant dashcam, CCTV, doorbell or mobile phone footage, gets in touch without delay."
