Man in court charged with two attempted murders after Edinburgh stabbing

Wednesday, 4 March 2026 16:44

By Jenness Mitchell, Scotland reporter

A suspect has appeared in court charged with two attempted murders amid an alleged stabbing in Edinburgh.

Armed police locked down the Calder Gardens area of the Scottish capital following reports of a man with a bladed weapon at about 8.25am on Monday.

The Cobbinshaw House tower block was sealed off until shortly after 3.30pm.

Suspect Mustafa Kokoneh, 23, was arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

Kokoneh appeared before Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday, where he made no plea to eight separate charges.

He has been accused of:

• Assault to danger of life and attempted murder;
• Assault to severe injury, permanent impairment, danger to life and attempted murder;
• Two counts of assault to danger of life;
• Breach of the peace;
• Having an article with a blade or point in a public place;
• Carrying offensive weapons;
• Vandalism.

The suspect, whose address was given as the city, was remanded in custody and is due back in the dock within eight days.

Police Scotland previously said the incident was not being treated as terror-related.

The force said a man suffered injuries "consistent with being stabbed", while a woman suffered a laceration to her head - which is "not believed to be caused by a bladed weapon".

Both were later discharged from the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Throughout the day, many of those who gathered at the high-rise told Sky News it was difficult to differentiate fact from fiction as there were "so many rumours" circulating online.

Police Scotland also warned of "misinformation" being shared on social media.

Chief Inspector Scott Kennedy stated: "While we understand what happened was frightening, I'd ask people to avoid speculating about the details and be mindful that false information could affect any future court proceedings."
