Man charged after Edinburgh 'stabbing and tower block stand-off'

Tuesday, 3 March 2026 16:43

By Jenness Mitchell, Scotland reporter

A man has been charged after a "disturbance" in Edinburgh, in which two people needed hospital treatment.

Armed police locked down the Calder Gardens area of the Scottish capital following reports of a man with a bladed weapon at about 8.25am on Monday.

A stand-off followed within the Cobbinshaw House tower block, which eventually came to an end shortly after 3.30pm.

Police Scotland said the incident was not being treated as terror-related.

In an update on Tuesday, the force said the 23-year-old man has now been charged.

The suspect is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

Police Scotland confirmed two people were taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with "non-life-threatening injuries".

A man suffered injuries "consistent with being stabbed", while a woman suffered a laceration to her head - which is "not believed to be caused by a bladed weapon".

The force said both the man and woman have since been discharged.

Throughout the day, many of those who gathered at the tower block told Sky News it was difficult to differentiate fact from fiction as there were "so many rumours" circulating online.

Police Scotland later confirmed the incident was not a hostage situation, adding that it had not received any reports that the suspect had tried to enter a nearby nursery.

Chief Inspector Scott Kennedy said: "I'm aware misinformation continues to be shared online about this incident which could cause further distress in the local community.

"I'd like to be clear: we did not receive any reports of a man attempting to enter a nursery or any educational establishment and this was not a hostage situation.

"While we understand what happened was frightening, I'd ask people to avoid speculating about the details and be mindful that false information could affect any future court proceedings.

"We still have a police presence in the area for reassurance and I thank the public for their continued assistance and support."
