Former Premier League referee David Coote charged over indecent video of a child

A former Premier League referee has been charged over an indecent video of a child, police have said.

David Coote, 43, was charged with making an indecent image of a child by Nottinghamshire Police in relation to a video file found by detectives in February this year.

Sky News understands the charge is over a Category A image, which is the most serious type of offence and usually involves children being sexually assaulted by adults.

The charge of making an image refers to activities such as downloading, sharing, or saving abuse photos.

Coote, of Collingham, was charged on 12 August and is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on 11 September, Nottinghamshire Police said.

The former referee was given an eight-week suspension by the Football Association in August after a video emerged of him making abusive comments about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in 2020.

Referees' body, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), confirmed his contract had been terminated in December.
